The inaugural Barry Sloane Lightning Singles has been held with Dave Carter running out winner after a day of excellent bowling.

As the name implies this is a tournament of quick matches of singles played in the ‘sets’ format Twenty one players nominated and started the day playing a round robin in pools of three. Each match was played over two 5 end sets with a one end tie breaker if needed. The leading 8 payers then progressed to a knockout phase to determine the eventual winner.

In the quarter finals Denise Lidbury had a close two set win over Lorraine Wake; Lawrie Riley outplayed Sue Fahey; Joel Hilliard snuck home against Stuart Graham while Dave Carter just managed to get the better of Joe Cremona.

Hilliard had a real tussle in his semi final with Lawrie Riley. The first set was a 4 all draw while Hilliard won the second 4 – 3 to progress to the final. Carter had an easier passage to the decider dominating his clash with Denise Lidbury.

Carter had the best possible start to the final winning the first four ends to grab the first set 7 – 2. He then won the first two ends of the second set before Hilliard fought back. Carter ultimately won the set and match 5 – 2 to win the title.

Thanks to Val Sloane for being present to present Carter with his prize and to Sue and John Fahey for their contribution to the day.
