A Tribute to Ken Bourke

By |2019-10-12T06:51:53+11:00July 4th, 2017|Categories: Golf Archives, Uncategorized|

It was a sad moment for Ken Bourke’s family and his many friends in the Tuross Head community when Ken passed away on the 29th December 2014.

He was much involved with the local community and was president of our Veteran’s Golf Club for 11 years. Friends and members remember the dedication and work he put into the organisation to make it the success it is now.

Visitors and members who attended the inter club golf days of the FSCVGA at Tuross, our regular gala days, Christmas in July and December parties, were all  appreciative of the work  that Ken and his wife Joy  put into organising the functions.

Possibly however, we will remember him for his dry wit he used as MC at the fun filled presentations following the weekly Wednesday morning nine hole competitions.

Many members were targets of his good natured and well deserved “Mr. Meany” fine sessions.

Ken was born in Goulburn in 1926, grew up in the Sydney suburb of Auburn, was educated at  Marist Brothers, Lidcome, enlisted in the army when he was 18, met his future wife Joy at a tennis game, married and  moved to Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains.

Here he was a busy father to Michael and Jane with the family expanding with the later additions of Kate and John.

He was involved with his church, school, sporting teams and was always there to help in building, coaching and supporting the community in some way.

Ken and Joy moved to Tuross Head in 1980 after retirement  to what was their little piece of paradise.  Here he continued his involvement in community activities with a  focus on golfing interests but also helping to build the town pathways, helping save the iconic Tuross Norfolk pines and enjoying singing  with the local Tuross Head  Country Club  Singers.

Ken was respected throughout his life as people recognised  his leadership qualities and his easy going generous  nature.

He was a wonderful husband to Joy, a good father to his children, Pop to his  grandchildren and Great Pop to his  recently born great grandson.

All of his family and his many friends in the golfing community will miss him dearly.

Tuross Head Country Club Golf Course Drainage Work on the 9th Fairway

By |2017-06-29T09:12:18+10:00June 27th, 2017|Categories: Golf Events - Men|

THCC course superintendent Tim Watson, featured above, quickly introduced new 18 year old apprentice Tyson Hastie to the rigors of golf course maintenance with a heavy program of fairway drainage work.

Every year the improvements to the course not only get better thanks to club management and the golfing              sub-clubs who contribute both funds and  working bee volunteers. The majority of the work however is done by a dedicated ground staff including Ben Hewison and Terry Beales, performing under Tim’s direction.

Major drainage works currently in progress on the 9th fairway consist of a geo  fabric rubble drainage in a  herringbone layout that will help maintain the  excellent grass coverage on this fairway.

Tim says “We have been working towards drainage on the fairways, including spoon drains, that have led to a great grass coverage and very few wet areas even after heavy rain.”

The next planned project is a concrete pathway joining the 9th men’s tee to the ladies tee.

Regular volunteer work is carried out on the first and third Monday of each month.

Former Club Junior Now an International PGA Tournament Golfer

The committee has been fortunate in being able to attract the support of the Jack Newton Junior Golf coaching organisation who participated in coaching lessons for our future golfers on the club open promotional day held on Sunday March 16th 2014.

Hopefully this support for local juniors can be continued into the future with a proposal to instigate the return of a regular coaching programme.

It was a pleasure and greatly appreciated to have the support and attendance of a past junior and local golfer Brendan Jones, now a touring PGA member and 1999 Australian Amateur Champion.

During this same year he was included in the Australian Eisenhower Trophy team which competed in Santiago, Chile. Other players in the team were Aaron Baddeley, Brett Rumford and Kim Felton.

It is doubtful if any golfer made a more spectacular start to their careers than Brendan.

In his very first professional game in the 1999 Ford Open at Kooyonga, Adelaide he returned a card with birdie, par, hole in one, birdie, birdie for the first five holes to eventually finish with a first round 69.

Brendan has played in the USA tour and has won over 15 tournaments, mostly in Japan and Asia.

His win in the prestigious Mizuno Open  in 2014 was the second time he has won this event.

During the open day he very generously gave his time and experience in talks to members.

It was also interesting to note in conversation with golfers from other clubs who have played our course during the current pennant matches and the recent Week of Golf, in which we were one of the participating clubs together with Mollymook, Moruya and Narooma, the high regard in which our club is held.

Mitsui Sumitomo Masters in Japan 2007.
