Shootout Between A Former Winner

 And Assistant Green Keeper

Mark Haberkorn V  Ben Hewison

With only a shot separating these two A Graders, it promised to be a tight match.

Like most expectations sometimes they don’t quite live up to the hype.

On the 1st Hole both players were looking at birdie putts, but an early bad sign for Mark saw Ben the holing his putt.

On the 2nd hole Mark hit back winning the hole with a par and this back and forth action is what we expected.

The 3rd hole once again saw some worrying signs for Mark. His short game, a poor chip and another three putts saw Ben back at one up.

The next hole was halved. Ben went to two up with a birdie on the next hole the 5th.

Ben took advantage on the 6th hole when Mark had another issue with the putter going to three up.

Mark followed up with another short game problem, allowing Ben to go to four up.

The next hole the 8th, the only hole on which Mark received a shot, he took the advantage to win the hole and was back to three up.

That’s the way they turned but it didn’t last long, with Ben knocking in another birdie on the 10th, going back to four up.

It stayed that way until the 12th hole, a hole they both would rather forget, but Mark won though, to pull one back to be three down.

Ben hit back straight away with a 3 metre birdie on the 13th

With holes fast running out, and four holes down they came to the 15th a do or die for Mark. The pressure proved to much and he pushed his shot out of bounds, and the game was over 5 and 3.

Ben played steady golf all day producing only one poor hole and three birdies, while Mark was struggling all day with his putter.

Congratulations to all participants

Congratulations to the winner Ben Hewison.

A Tribute to Ken Bourke

By |2019-10-12T06:51:53+11:00July 4th, 2017|Categories: Golf Archives, Uncategorized|

It was a sad moment for Ken Bourke’s family and his many friends in the Tuross Head community when Ken passed away on the 29th December 2014.

He was much involved with the local community and was president of our Veteran’s Golf Club for 11 years. Friends and members remember the dedication and work he put into the organisation to make it the success it is now.

Visitors and members who attended the inter club golf days of the FSCVGA at Tuross, our regular gala days, Christmas in July and December parties, were all  appreciative of the work  that Ken and his wife Joy  put into organising the functions.

Possibly however, we will remember him for his dry wit he used as MC at the fun filled presentations following the weekly Wednesday morning nine hole competitions.

Many members were targets of his good natured and well deserved “Mr. Meany” fine sessions.

Ken was born in Goulburn in 1926, grew up in the Sydney suburb of Auburn, was educated at  Marist Brothers, Lidcome, enlisted in the army when he was 18, met his future wife Joy at a tennis game, married and  moved to Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains.

Here he was a busy father to Michael and Jane with the family expanding with the later additions of Kate and John.

He was involved with his church, school, sporting teams and was always there to help in building, coaching and supporting the community in some way.

Ken and Joy moved to Tuross Head in 1980 after retirement  to what was their little piece of paradise.  Here he continued his involvement in community activities with a  focus on golfing interests but also helping to build the town pathways, helping save the iconic Tuross Norfolk pines and enjoying singing  with the local Tuross Head  Country Club  Singers.

Ken was respected throughout his life as people recognised  his leadership qualities and his easy going generous  nature.

He was a wonderful husband to Joy, a good father to his children, Pop to his  grandchildren and Great Pop to his  recently born great grandson.

All of his family and his many friends in the golfing community will miss him dearly.
